INTERNET provider PowerTel is set to introduce a new billing system after acquiring new state-of-the art billing equipment, an official said over the weekend.

PowerTel chairman Mr Francis Chirimuuta on Sunday said the new system would allow the firm to bill customers according to actual data bundles used in a month.

"We have acquired the new billing system which I am sure has already arrived in the country," he said.

"Currently PowerTel charges mobile broadband users a flat US$50 monthly for unlimited usage."

Mr Chirimuuta said the company would focus on growing its business by selling wholesale data bundles to other Internet service providers and big corporate buyers.

He added that PowerTel will be introducing its own shops in the country in addition to the Zesa banking halls as distribution points for their products.

"One shop is already open in Bulawayo and another will be opened in Harare soon," Mr Chirimuuta said, adding that they would also establish dealerships and franchisees soon.

The chairman said the Internet provider was looking to converged fixed and mobile services and saying they had a vast array of converged products on the way.

Meanwhile, the company has since last year invested nearly US$40 million in business and network expansion. It currently boasts over 5 000km of fibre connection to the undersea cable. — New Ziana.
