'Construction sector remains depressed'

Zimbabwe's construction sector is expected to remain depressed due to the economic due to the economic uncertainty posed by the July 31 election, industry players indicate.

While sector has been subdued due to persistent economic challenges, including tight liquidity and low capacity utilisation, the recent poll escalated challenges for most building materials manufacturers with sales slackening pre and post the plebiscite.

Listed asbestos manufacturer Turnall Holdings Limited says its sales were sluggish in the half-year to June 2013 due to uncertainty created by the elections.

Stakeholders in the construction industry are pinning their hopes on the availing of mortgage finance by financial institutions to boost their operational capacity to at least 60 percent.

The construction industry has been experiencing financial constraints over the previous months, hence low activity.

Hopes are high that the availing of mortgage finance will boost the industry in the next few months.
