Cottco closes selling points

Cottco closes selling points

Cotton Company of Zimbabwe has closed most of its depots in Masvingo to mark the end of the selling season, amid projections that the province was poised for a bumper harvest after favourable rains in the last farming season.

The development comes as farmers in the province have appealed to Government to provide inputs early so that their farming operations are not affected.

In an interview over the weekend, National Cotton Producers and Marketers Association chairman Mr Steward Mudamburi said the majority of farmers had already delivered their crop.

"We have already closed most of our selling points in the province because most of the farmers have already dispatched their cotton," he said.

"They are already burning their cotton stalks in preparatory for the coming farming season."

Mr Mudamburi said only a few selling points were still operational in Mwenezi district where farmers received the inputs late, forcing some of them to plant their crop at the beginning of the year.

"We are only left with few depots open in Mwenezi, particularly in areas where farmers received inputs late," he said.

"They had to plant their cotton at the beginning of this year. Some of them still have green cotton in their fields, hence we did not close all the depots in the district."

Some of the farmers appealed to Government to provide them with inputs on time so that they planted their crop earlier.
