'Zimbabwe has over 2 months' supply of fuel'

The Ministry of Energy and Power Development has assured the nation that it is holding more than two months' supply of diesel and over a month's supply of petrol.

Minister of Energy Dr Samuel Undenge said the shortages experienced at the weekend were due to panic buying and tendencies of hoarding fuel, however, he admitted that there had been challenges in terms of foreign currency allocations towards the fuel sector.

"This was triggered by social media reports which painted a negative picture in terms of fuel supply, despite several assurances that the allocations towards fuel procurement had been increased."

Dr John Mangudya, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor said that allocations for fuel had increased to $10 million a week from $7 million previously.

Dr Undenge's ministry had facilitated the procurement of 20 million litres of fuel made available to oil companies to ensure adequate fuel at service stations.

The fuel is being held in bond at the National Oil Infrastructure Company depots in Harare.
