Spain eyes Zimbabwe energy sector

Spain is exploring investment opportunities in Zimbabwe's energy sector as relations between the two countries grow stronger.

Zimbabwe-Spain relations are being reinforced following the coming into power of a new dispensation and a subsequent visit by a special envoy sent by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Madrid in March.

Speaking after paying a courtesy call on Energy and Power Development Minister Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, Spanish ambassador to Zimbabwe Alicia Moral said she has been meeting with various cabinet ministers in a bid to deepen economic collaboration between the two countries in different areas.

"The economic aspect of this relationship is very important and this is why the Economic and Commercial Councillor who is based in Johannesburg came this week to meet with ministers of different companies to explore economic opportunities.

"This is the main purpose of this meeting, to see available opportunities for Spanish companies in the energy sector. I want to say the energy sector is very important for us because there is a number of big Spanish companies who have a lot of expertise in energy and more specifically renewable energy," said Ambassador Moral.

Minister Khaya Moyo had an opportunity to brief Ambassador Moral on the prospects for energy investment projects in Zimbabwe in the near future.

Several European countries have warmed up to the prospect of up-scaling investment in the country following a charm offensive by government.
