Wheat hectarage in drastic decline
Published: 05 August 2013
Zimbabwe's winter wheat hectarage drastically declined from the anticipated 26 000 hectares to 3 000 hectares for the 2013 season because government was pre-occupied with funding electoral process hence under funding some economic sectors, the ZCFU said today.

Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers' Union (ZCFU) president Wonder Chabikwa said the decline resulted from the GNU's failure to fund wheat production.

Chabikwa also indicated that there has been low funding from local banks to fund the winter crop.

For the past 10 years, wheat production has been on the decline with the last two seasons being the worst.

Zimbabwe has an annual wheat consumption of 450 000 tonnes.
