Zimbabwe on Monday officially released the 2012 population census results after the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) completed the data processing exercise. However, figures released do not include people in the Diaspora.

According to the official results released, the total population of the country is 13 061 239, comprising 6 280 539 males and 6 780 700 females which is 0.7 percent more than the initial figure released in the preliminary report in December last year.

The population census, which was carried out last August, was the fourth to be undertaken by the government since 1980. In 1982 Zimbabwe had a population of 7.5 million, a figure that increased to 10 million in 1992 and then 11.2 in 2002.

Speaking at the launch, Finance and Economic Development deputy Minister Samuel Undenge said it was vital for Government to know the population dynamics of the of the country in order to effectively provide essential services as well as uplift the livelihoods of the citizens.

Undenge commended Zimbabwe for consistently carrying out census undertakings which required huge financial and human resources.
