Truck drivers allege inefficiency at Beitbridge

Long distance truck drivers have called on relevant authorities to tackle the operational challenges faced at the Beitbridge Border Post which are negatively affecting international trade.

Nearly a hundred long distance truck drivers from the southern region were stranded for days at the Beitbridge Border Post after the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) embarked on a hundred percent search of all commercial cargo.

The drivers, some of whom spent days at the port of entry without access to food or ablution facilities said efforts to engage the revenue authority officials over the delays had been fruit-less.

Other drivers bemoaned general inefficiency at the border post.

Among the cargo in transit are hazardous substances such as fuel, chemicals, perishables, mining equipment and imported vehicles among others.

The ZBC News contacted ZIMRA public relations officer Tawungano Ndoro who however failed to respond to questions sent to him early this week.

Beitbridge is the busiest port of entry in the southern region and experts say a one stop border post concept such as the one operational at Chirundu is the panacea to addressing challenges of congestion and delays.
