All those who graduated from public institutions starting with the University of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 2006 and received government grants would be required to pay US$1000 that will go towards a revolving fund to support current and prospective high and tertiary students.

The news was revealed by the Minister of High and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Jonathan Moyo during a graduation ceremony at Gweru Polytechnic.

Government is sensitive to the plight of current and future students who lack the capacity to finance their education and as such it has set up programmes to support students in tertiary institutions.

Addressing graduands at Gweru Polytechnic, Professor Moyo said government is in the process of  finalising the introduction of an educational loan facility to support the students and that all those who received state funded education from 1980 t0 2006 will soon be required to pay US$1000 that will also go towards the revolving fund to support the current and prospective students.

Professor Moyo further highlighted that his ministry has set up a national task force on the transformation of higher and tertiary education that will comprehensively review the question of attachment as most students fail to find relevant and appropriate placements.

He said the task force will align attachment with the new paradigm under his ministry so that it is relevant and meaningful.

578 students graduated at Gweru Polytechnic with 244 of them being male and 334 females.

Of these 23 percent graduated in the engineering disciplines where 130 were engineering artisans and four engineering technicians.

In addition to the technicians they were 84 technical subject teachers who graduated and they are now qualified to teach technical subjects in secondary schools.
