Zimbabwe and South Africa have pledged their commitment to facilitate the smooth flow of cross border traffic in line with the bilateral road transport agreement signed between the two countries.

The Zimbabwe-South Africa Joint Route Management Group and Joint Committee met in Harare today to address concerns and operational constraints affecting transport operators in both countries.

The Permanent Secretary in Zimbabwe's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Dr Machivenyika Mapuranga and South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Mphakama Mbete concurred that transport plays a critical and strategic role in ensuring sustainable growth of the two countries' economies.

The major concerns were the need to speedily implement the one stop border post at Beitbridge, improve governance of the cross-border transport flows and developing harmonised cross-border transports regimes within SADC.

Meanwhile, border post problems that are affecting trade in Zimbabwe are road user charges, the use of bond notes and availability of forex, harassment by officials as well as customs clearance procedures.
