LAWYERS acting for businessman Mr Wicknell Chivayo have dismissed reports that their client was arrested last weekend saying he was a free man who abides by the laws of the country.

In a statement, Advocate Thabani Mpofu dispelled the reports saying Mr Chivayo was never  arrested, neither was he found on the wrong side of the law.

"Contrary to the Daily News report of the 11th of December 2017, Wicknell Chivayo was never arrested neither did I confirm any arrest to that publication. As you may be aware, the story was taken down from the Daily News website after its falsity became apparent.

"I thank the senior officials at ANZ (Associated Newspapers Zimbabwe) for their intervention in making sure that the disturbingly unfortunate and improper gospel carried by the screaming story was put to an immediate halt," said Adv Mpofu.

Adv Mpofu said Mr Chivayo was enjoying his liberty.

"The correct position is that Mr Chivayo is, and has at all material times, been enjoying his personal liberty, no basis ever having existed for him to have a brush with the law.

"Indeed all the media houses understood that inexorable and ineluctable fact, little wonder they did not run with the story," he said.

Adv Mpofu said Mr Chivayo was a law abiding citizen who respects the laws of the country.

"I wish to make it abundantly clear that Mr Chivayo is a law abiding citizen who views the law as an instrument of development, progression, empowerment, emancipation and has complete and desperate regard and respect for it," he said.

The lawyer said his client was, instead, ready to play his part in turning around the economy.

"In his business dealings, he will continue to carry himself with decorum, deportment and dignity and is too anxious to play his part in the advancement of the republic's economic interests and fortunes in line with the ongoing national democratic and economic project," said Adv Mpofu.

Media reports alleged that Mr Chivayo was taken away by security details over his $5 million Zesa tender deal.
