The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) regularly conducts lifestyle audits among its officers to curb corruption within its rank and file, a senior police officer has said.

Speaking at the 100-Day Quick Wins Workshop at Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) last Friday, Officer Commanding Mashonaland Central Province Assistant Commissioner Trust Nhapata said through lifestyle audits, every police officer was required to declare assets and sources of income.

The event was attended by the Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Advocate Martin Dinha and senior civil servants in Government departments and parastatals. "As the ZRP, we have a zero tolerance on corruption," said Asst Comm Nhapata. "We do lifestyle audits in the ZRP where each member is required to declare assets and source of income."

Asst Comm Nhapata said the force was prepared to tackle corruption within its rank and file and in the public domain.

The police force, he said, had since activated and reinvigorated station supervision management.

Mashonaland Central has started retraining police officers on customer service, he said. "We are conducting refresher courses targeting constables and assistant inspectors," said Asst Comm Nhapata.

"So far, we have trained 50 junior officers in this province. We are retraining all our officers in public order management."

According to Asst Comm Nhapata, the number of roadblocks in the province had been slashed to ensure that they were 100 kilometres apart along the major highways.

He said ZRP will not only be promoting road safety, but will also increase police visibility in order to curb crime in the province.

As a result, mounted or horseback patrols will be introduced, especially in farming areas, he said.
