Hwange bars workers

Hwange Colliery Company Limited [HCCL] allegedly barred its workers from meeting Members of Parliament investigation team, amid allegations of mismanagement and corruption at the coal miner, it has been revealed.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Commitee on Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare had invited the workers for a hearing at the colliery last week, but the mine's management allegedly prevented the meeting from taking place.

The move has infuriated Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions president Peter Mutasa, who has vowed to take the matter up with the authories.

Mutasa said the threats by the mine management showed they had something to hide.

Wives of colliery employers have been sleeping in the open for over 100 days in a desperate bid to press the company to pay their spouses outstanding salaries and other benefits.

HCCL managing director Thomas Makore, whom the protesting women want fired together with some of his managers for alleged mismanagement, did not respond to questions emailed to him last week.
