Calls to re-open Cashel Valley border post

The Chimanimani community has appealed for the re-opening of the Cashel Valley commercial border post as well as its upgrading in order to reduce congestion on Forbes border post.

22 years ago the people of Zimbabwe and Mozambique celebrated the opening of Cashel Valley border post that operated for about four years before its shutting down with reports indicating that it closed over disagreements between Zimbabwean and Mozambican officials.

Former immigration officer and a resident of Cashel Valley Michael Nyamatore said the Cashel Valley border post was not only popular with Zimbabweans but was now a favourite entry point for South Africans who wanted to visit Mozambique.

Mr Nyamatore said it is disheartening to note that international tourists who use GPs are returned at the Cashel Valley entry point only to be told that the border is no longer functional.

"We appeal for the re-opening of Cashel Valley commercial border post that was closed in the year 2000 after operating four about four years. The volume of traffic from South Africa into Mozambique had increased significantly by the time the border post was closed," he said.

Chimanimani East Zanu-PF aspiring legislator Joshua Sacco said the re-opening of the border will decongest Forbes border post stating that there should be resuscitation of dialogue between Zimbabwe and Mozambique on the issue.

"Cashel Valley border post is a strategic route into Mozambique and its operationalisation will help to decongest Forbes border post," said Sacco.

There is, however, need to widen and rehabilitate the road linking the border post to the interior and improve on infrastructure in order for the re-opening to be a reality.
