Death stalks Tsvangirai family

Death stalks Tsvangirai family

AS ZIMBABWEANS across the political divide continue to mourn the death of MP for Glen View South, Vimbayi  Tsvangirai Java - many have been left wondering why the family of the late much-loved former prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai - has had the misfortune of being struck by deaths in such a short period of time.

Tragedy after tragedy has visited Tsvangirai's family in the last 10 years – including the deaths of Morgan, wife Susan, grandson, brother, sister and daughter.

Yesterday, rival MDC politicians expressed their sadness and sorrow over Vimbayi's death who succumbed to injuries sustained in a horrific accident just outside Kwekwe, last month.

"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Tsvangirai and Java families on the untimely and tragic passing on of the late Vimbayi .

"Vimbayi  was a young, vibrant and up-and-coming God-fearing politician who was very humble and sincere.

"Her death, coming as it does just over a year after the sad passing on of her father is extremely painful and difficult to deal with," vice president of the rival MDC, Obert Gutu, told the Daily News yesterday.

"It's harsh and painful. Anyway, it is God's will but then, no one can ever get used to death happening so frequently within the same family.

"In this solemn moment of sadness and sorrow, we are praying to God… bring comfort, healing and solace to the grieving Tsvangirai and Java families. May Vimbayi's departed soul rest in eternal peace," added Gutu.

Tendai Biti, the former Finance minister during the shortlived but stability-inducing government of national unity (GNU), said he was at a loss for words following Tsvangirai-Java's death.

"It never rains but pours for the.. MDC. It never rains but pours for the… Tsvangirai family.

"We have no words for the loss of Vimbayi  Tsvangirai. We have no adjective for the pain & the dispossession.

"We have nowhere to begin. Nowhere to turn to. We defer to God the almighty," Biti wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Tsvangiri-Java was left with serious injuries after the car that she and her occupants were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision near Truckers Inn, outside Kwekwe.

She was travelling together with her campaign manager Paul Rukanda and Tafadzwa Mhundwa, who was also councillor for Mt Pleasant Ward 7.

Mhundwa was cousin to the late Susan, who also tragically passed on in similar circumstances in 2009.

Vimbayi's death has cast a dark cloud over the Tsvangirai family which was left wondering why it has had to endure such saddening and painful moments in the last decade.

In March 2009, just a month after Tsvangirai was sworn in as PM, Susan died in an accident along the Harare-Beitbridge road.

The late PM, who was travelling with his wife, survived the accident.

Almost a month after Susan's death, the Tsvangirai family suffered another tragedy when the former PM's grandson, Sean died in a swimming pool accident at his old Strathaven home.

Sean was the son of Garikai Tsvangirai who had flown from Canada with his family to attend his mother's funeral.

Nine years later, on Valentine's Day last year, the MDC founding president died after losing his battle with cancer of the colon.

Barely two months after Tsvangirai's death, his sister Miriro died from asthma and heart disease complications.

His younger brother Casper died  in October last year.
