The government says it is working on a policy that will compel local tourism business entities to procure their food items and products from local farmers and companies in a move aimed a boosting the local industry.

In an interview, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Walter Mzembi said his ministry has noted with concern that most hotels and restraints are importing their foods and agricultural products such as onions and fruits from neighbouring countries.

"My ministry has started working on a policy that will compel the tourism players to buy products, especially agricultural products, from local suppliers," said Mzembi.

He said in line with the national indigenisation policy, local companies should fully support local industries and farmers, most of whom are failing to get a market for their products.

Minister Mzembi said in line with the policy, hotels and restaurants will be asked to produce receipts of their procurement.

He called on the tourism industry to support the policy as it aims at stimulating the growth of the national economy.

There has been reports that some horticulture farmers are failing to get a market for their farm produce, resulting in them selling the products at very low prices.

Some reports of farm produce going bad because of lack of markets have also been recorded.
