STEWARD Bank on Wednesday opened a new branch in Bulawayo as part of its expansion drive.

Speaking at the official opening of the branch along Fife Street, Steward Bank chief executive officer (CEO) Kwanele Ngwenya, said the opening of the branch would increase efficiency, convenience and access to money for their customers.

"The opening of this branch is a move towards improving the distribution channels in the banking sector, encouraging and building a saving culture among our people," he said.

Ngwenya said the bank now boasts of over a million customers who have opened accounts without having to do any paper work through the EcocashSave.

"The bank has over a million customers who opened accounts through EcocashSave and we are happy that we have managed to make saving easier and our aim is to include everyone even those who were not eligible to open bank accounts before," he said.

Ngwenya said they were committed to providing reliable and efficient services to everyone with internet technology.

"Through the use of some of our products like EcocashSave and Ecocash loans, we want to ensure that even the people in remote areas receive and have access to our banking services," he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Bulawayo Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo, said the opening of the new branch symbolised the entrance of a partner in the resuscitation of the city.

"The opening of this branch means that people will have more access to financial services and loans to finance their businesses to ensure growth of the city," he said.

Clr Moyo applauded the bank for making efforts towards achieving financial inclusion, which is an important part of the economy.

He said a well functioning banking system promotes a clearer path for self-sustenance.

"This will create a clearer path for self-sustenance as everyone is able to save whatever amount of money they have regardless of how little it is and it will provide a solution for those who need financial assistance," said Clr Moyo.
