The planned resumption of the Harare-Kariba-Victoria falls flight by Air Zimbabwe is a positive development towards the enhancement of business and internal distribution of tourists, an official has said.

Zimbabwe Tourism Authority head of corporate affairs officer Sugar Chagonda whose organisation was involved in the resumption talks said:

"The resumption of the flight is a positive development as it will see to the enhancement of business for tourism, for we expect more tourists to visit the nation," he said.

The national airliner is scheduled to service the route using a 52-seater MA60 plane after a seven year absence.

Tourists visiting Kariba from Harare have had to make use of other means of transport.

"Tourists have had to depend on other means of transportation, mainly road.  This development will make travelling easier and efficient," said Chagonda.

"There was great need for us to distribute our tourists internally.  Tourists would visit and leave the nation without visiting the other tourists' resorts due to transportation that was not efficient.

"The development will enable visiting of many resorts."

The flight which will leave Harare for Kariba later connect to Victoria Falls is also targeting local tourists.

"We are not only targeting the foreign tourists but we also have the locals in mind.  We want them to visit Kariba more often, the flight will necessitate such a move," said Chagonda.

Chagonda also noted that business will not only be enhanced for tourism but even for the local retailers in Kariba.

"The flight will enable good transportation which will increase the number of tourists. Local retailers will also benefit from this development as their products will also be consumed by tourists during their visits, " he said.

The resumption of the flight comes at a time when the country is working to lure more tourists.
