Econet Zimbabwe plans overlay services
Published: 17 February 2015

Econet Wireless says it will focus on developing value added services (VAS) in 2015 to capitalise on the network infrastructure it has invested in over the years.

CEO Douglas Mboweni said the company, which has 9 million mobile subscribers and 3 million registered mobile money users, has invested about $1 billion into its Zimbabwean network over the past few years.

Mboweni said Econet will venture into more overlay and VAS. Mboweni said Econet would focus on a speedy roll-out of LTE this year.

Econet launched LTE in Zimbabwe in 2013, but this was restricted mainly to Victoria Falls, the host venue for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly.
