Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Supa Mandiwanzira told a mobile money conference in Harare on Thursday that the Zimbabwe government is eyeing to wholly own mobile operator Telecel in a bid to end wrangles in the company with empowerment groups that has stalled growth in recent years.
The government currently hold 60% of Telecel and the remaining 40% is owned by Empowerment Corporation, a group of local shareholders.
Mandiwanzira said government's intention is to own 100% because there is a lot of sanitisation that need to be done in shareholding.
The government last year completed a $40 million purchase of 60 % stake in Telecel from the Amsterdam headquartered Vimpelcom.
Telecel is the country s smallest telecoms firm with over 2,4 million subscribers.
