Shabanie Mine management speaks on re-opening
Published: 19 February 2018
Shabanie Mine management says the re-opening of the entity is dependent upon a successful revival of its Mandava subsidiary.

There is commitment from stakeholders that Shabanie Mine which closed business years back should open up.

This commitment, however, is based on a number of factors.

Exactly what are the facts on the ground pertaining to Shabanie Mine?
It is the jewel of the asbestos giant the SMM Holdings Group.

It is the mine which created the town of Zvishavane.

It requires US$60 million capital re-injection.

For now the mine does not have such an amount and will need government support.

The mine is also flooded but the management says it has managed to keep the underground water at a “safe” level.

And the voice that has been sought by the ZBC News to explain says only after re-opening Gaths Mine in Mashava and letting it run efficiently can capital then be raised to plough into Shabanie Mine.

The Chief Executive Officer Mr Chirandu Dlembeu spoke about a 2 to 3 year time frame from now.

Mashava is still yet to open also although being dangled as the key which could be used to revive Shabanie.

Beyond all the talking there is anxiety that implementation should be now.
