One of the country's leading commercial banks, CBZ is set to open a new branch in Shurugwi as it seeks to increase its clientèle base.

Shurugwi town secretary Mr Solomon Siziba said the bank was expected to open the branch in the mining town soon.

He said the move was welcome as it was a crucial step towards the growth of the town as it sought to achieve municipal status by 2020.

"CBZ Bank approached us indicating they were keen to open a branch in Shurugwi as part of its drive to increase their clientele base," said Mr Siziba.

"As a council, we welcome the move as it will contribute to the growth of our town."

Mr Siziba said the town had few banks, which were inadequate for the ever increasing population in the mining town.

"The population in the town is growing fast," he said.

"Shurugwi is home to the country's third largest platinum miner Unki Mines, Ferro-chrome producer Zimasco, Golden Quarries Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Falcon Gold and artisanal miners.

"This huge population has been serviced by few banks that are available in the town."

Mr Siziba said the town council was facilitating the opening of the bank's branch.

"We will assist them in every way possible as we feel there is an urgent need for another bank in Shurugwi," he said.

"Our duty as the council is to make sure that investors get the much needed assistance for the growth our town."

Mr Siziba said one of the largest supermarkets, Pick n Pay, was also set to open doors in Shurugwi.

He said council recently held a meeting with the supermarket management when they were exploring investment opportunities in the mining town.
