South African exports to Zimbabwe fall

South Africa is feeling the pinch of the tight import controls gazetted by the Zimbabwean government with statistics indicating the volume of exports have registered a 10 percent drop since January.

Zimbabwe, a key trading partner for South Africa effected a Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016 mid last year which tightened controls on selected commodities.

Data shown to the ZBC News at the SADC Industrialisation Workshop in Johannesburg indicate that South Africa has incurred a 10 percent drop in exports to Zimbabwe on the back of the tight controls.

An official from the SADC secretariat Dr Monane Monnane told the ZBC News on the sidelines of the workshop that Zimbabwe should therefore focus on a vibrant industrial system to produce quality goods at competitive pricing models.

"We now need a strong industrialisation system to unlock more benefits and increase income," said Dr Monnane.

The government is, however, calling on local industries to take advantage of the SI 64 of 2016 by recapitalising operations as the instrument will in the near future be reviewed in line with regional trade protocols.
