VACANCY:- LABORATORY RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

The Zimbabwe Sugar Association Experiment Station [Z.S.A.E.S) seeks to fill a position of laboratory Research Technician in the Agricultural Chemistry and Soils Department with an incumbent who has an aptitude or understanding of agricultural laboratory research systems and evaluation techniques.


Z.S.A.E.S which is situated in the South Eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe, is owned and funded by the Zimbabwe Sugarcane Industry through the Zimbabwe Sugar Association (Z.S.A). The Experiment Station serves the interests of the Zimbabwe Sugarcane Industry through research, evaluation, transfer of technologies and provision of specialized services to improve sustained productivity and profitability of growing sugarcane in Zimbabwe.

KEY DUTIES
Reporting to the Agricultural Chemist, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
- Managing correct use and functioning of laboratory and field equipment in the Analytical, and / or Diagnostic Laboratories that are involved in analysis of sugarcane quality, soils, foliar, and water;
- Providing and controlling laboratory resources and participating in laboratory, greenhouse, and research;
- Managing, supervising, and training a staff compliment of Laboratory Assistants and General Employees as well as ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, quality control procedures, and to laboratory safety,
- Enforcing adherence by Laboratory Assistants and students to established and acceptable high standards of laboratory best practices;
- Planning and preparing of monthly, weekly, and daily work plans and assigning work to Laboratory Assistants;
- Assisting with preparation of the departmental budget, ordering of laboratory chemicals, and equipment;
- Ensuring compliance with all the laid down Safety, Occupational Health and Environment (SHE) policies and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor's degree in Science Technology/Applied Chemistry or Soil Science.
- Master's degree in any one of the same fields will be an added advantage.
- Five years' experience in a similar position at a recognized research station/ institution.
- Must be a mature and meticulous team player with integrity, excellent computing skills, and good judgment
- A clean Class 4 driver's license and at least three years of driving experience are a prerequisite
