The government says it will establish a Pan-African Minerals University of Science and Technology (PAMUST) in an effort address the issues of value addition to Africa's mineral resources in line with the African Union (AU)'s Africa mining vision.

According to the government, the establishment of the institution is in recognition of the fact that the extractive industry is knowledge-intensive and hence the need to invest in human resources development and research.

In a speech during the official opening of the 2013 Africa for Results Forum and the 6th AFCOP annual meeting, the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Walter Chidhakwa said the establishment of such a university is provided for in the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM ASSET).

Minister Chidhakwa told the gathering that it is disheartening that the continent's mining industry is still reflective of the colonial operating model, hence the need for Africa to adopt inclusive models to ensure control of the natural resources.

The two-day meeting, running under the theme, 'Powering and Effective Management of Natural Resources,' is set to develop strategies for the sustainable management of the Africa's natural resources in line with the Africa mining vision adopted in February, 2009 by the AU heads of state.
