Mugabe to launch ZACC campaign

PRESIDENT Mugabe is expected to launch the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) public education and publicity campaign in Harare on Wednesday.

ZACC spokesperson Mrs Phyllis Chikundura, in a statement, said the launch seeks to build consensus on collective measures in the fight against corruption.

"In line with Zim-Asset, the public and private sector organisations, the general public, church organisations and civil society have to come together and pledge a total commitment to 'Zero tolerance to corruption'," she said.

The launch will also try to reinforce existing national anti-corruption mechanisms and to enlist and collectively foster public support in the fight against the scourge.

Further, it will also outline the role that has to be played by various stakeholders in the fight. Mrs Chikundura said corruption has become so pervasive that it is now threatening national development.

"It has been agreed that in order to achieve the fundamentals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the fundamentals of the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio and Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset), there is great need to continuously fight against corruption.

"In Zimbabwe, corruption levels are increasing on a daily basis, hence the need to join hands and collaboratively fight against corruption. The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2016 rankings by Transparency International have ranked Zimbabwe position 154 out of 176 assessed nations globally. Zimbabwe had a score of 22 out of 100," she said.

It is against this background that the commission is unveiling the ZACC public education and publicity campaign strategy. Stakeholders that are expected to attend the launch include the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), all Government ministries, Parliament of Zimbabwe and sister commissions - Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Zimbabwe Land Commission (ZLC) and Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC).

Zimstat, women and youth groups, Transparency International (Zimbabwe Chapter), local authorities, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), Employers' Confederation of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), Law Society of Zimbabwe, Public Service Commission (PSC), Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) and traditional leaders will also attend.
