Mnangagwa headlines mining investment conference

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa is expected to headline the Zimbabwe Mining Investment Conference scheduled for next week in Harare where over 20 countries have expressed interest in participating.

The conference, which is scheduled for February 27 and 28, will deal with the ease of doing mining business, investment opportunities and mineral value addition among other issues.

President Mnangagwa will be supported by Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa. African Chrome Fields national project director Ashruf Kaka and Liberation Mining CEO Victoria Tskhovrebov will also be part of the conference.

Mining Development Minister Chitando told journalists that various investors are flocking to Zimbabwe for investment opportunities in the mining sector.

"The event will be officially opened by His Excellency, President ED Mnangagwa and has attracted interest from over 20 countries and we are excited to have engagements with the Zimbabwean mining industry and international investors.

"To showcase mining investment opportunities in the country, the mining industry through the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, with support of my ministry, are organising the Zimbabwe Mining Conference to be held in Harare from February 27 to February 28 2018," Minister Chitando said.

The 2017 State of Mining Industry Survey by the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe indicated that the mining industry requires in excess of $7 billion in investment in capital for sustenance and the growth of the industry.

Minister Chitando said efforts are being undertaken to improve the ease of doing business and render the mining sector in Zimbabwe internationally competitive. This comes at a time when President Mnangagwa is spearheading engagements with the international community to normalise and improve relations.

Such improved relations act as a base for attracting investment into the economy. He said efforts by the Government are being complimented at sectoral level. He said given its abundant mineral resources, the mining sector has massive potential to contribute to much-needed sustainable economic growth.
