Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Jorum Gumbo this week announced a new seven member board for the Central Mechanical and Equipment Department (CMED) in which renowned academic, Professor Sheunesu Mupepereki has been retained as chairperson.

Professor Mupepereki will be deputised by lawyer, Simplicius Chihambakwe, while other board members include Tinotenda Nhewede, Dorothy Mavalwane and Jerry Gotora.

Gumbo said the board should focus on giving strategic direction and advice to management and crafting strategies that fit the current business environment.

He said the board was also expected to ensure that the principles of good corporate governance were upheld.

Gumbo said in the past, roles and procedures between the Minister, the board and management were either not clear or were flouted leading to unaccountability, inefficiency and corruption.

"We should therefore be clear on our respective roles in order to avoid unnecessary conflict," he said.

"I also urge the board and management to be clear on the expectations of the Public Utilities and Corporate Governance Bill which is due to become law soon. Its impact and implications on boards and management are fundamental and you have to be prepared for its coming into effect."

Professor Mupepereki immediately pledged to ensure transparency and to rid the department of corruption.
