'Govt reconfiguring Zim education system'

ZIMBABWE is working on a reconfiguration of the country's famed education system to create an inclusive structure that answers to the demands of society, Higher and Tertiary Education minister Amon Murwira has said.

Murwira made the remarks in his address as the guest of honour last week at Zimbabwe College of Music's 11th graduation ceremony where students were conferred with certificates and degrees in Harare.

"My ministry is restructuring the higher and tertiary education sector to deliver a university or college institution that is a training institution with five missions, teaching, research, community service, innovation and industrialisation," Murwira said.

"We want to create a Zimbabwe desired by its people through education system that is inclusive. Our education system should bring peace, hope and prosperity through its products."

After years of neglect under former President Robert Mugabe despite huge gains in the early years of majority rule, Murwira said colleges and universities should now be places of hope.

"Let us take up with confidence, the responsibility of developing and propelling Zimbabwe, Africa and the world into a prosperous and peaceful future. No one, but ourselves can ensure we create the Zimbabwe, Africa and the World we want," the Cabinet minister said.

Murwira said graduates should tell the society what they can do using the skills acquired in universities or colleges rather than society prescribing on them what they should do after college.

"For education which cannot produce jobs by itself is not relevant at all. You are the people where the nation's hope and inspiration is to provide growth to the economy and create new jobs," he said.

He said the government will tap into the country's rich heritage to develop the nation.

"To contribute to development, we must use the heritage to develop competitive knowledge. We must use our local environment to innovate," he said.
