Chamisa rubbishes Mwonzora 'confession' to MDC role in January violence

THE MDC has accused Zanu-PF of attempts to fan divisions within its ranks after laying hands on a mysterious letter purportedly authored party secretary general Douglas Mwonzora clandestinely informing police and the CIO on the main opposition's role in the deadly January violence.

Contents of the letter were revealed at a media briefing addressed by party president Nelson Chamisa Wednesday.

The letter, according to MDC, falsely detailed how the party had planned and executed the violence during the ill-fated protests.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters, Chamisa said the letter was an attempt by the enemy to associate Mwonzora with the mischief.

The letter was copied to police and the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).

"There has been some communication that is purported to have come from our SG. They think they can divide us, we are indivisible," Chamisa said.

"The letter seems to be indicating that they are authentically informing that the violence that occurred in the country was carried out by our party members in particular the senior leaders."

The MDC leader said this was a Zanu-PF fabrication and a likely attempt to find an excuse to advance human rights abuses by the State.

"Clearly this is the work of people who have been parroting a propaganda lie that the MDC had anything to do with the January disturbances," he said.

"We have said it several times that we do not organise things nicodemously or at night.

"This letter is meant to prepare the nation. We have seen it in the past wherein they have tried to justify cracking down on attacks on the MDC, this is not new…this is a machination and we wanted to tell the world that there was no way this letter originated from the MDC."

Mwonzora also rubbished the purported confession in the letter, detailing title and logo errors, misuse of titles and the fact that the letter was not signed.

The Zanu-PF led government has accused MDC of instigating the January skirmishes which saw massive looting by protestors, eliciting a brutal State reaction that saw the killing of 17 by the army.

A handful party MPs and activists have since been arrested and charged with subverting a constitutional government.
