Zanu-PF hires Matsanga to hunt down Geza

Published: 19 May 2025
Controversial Ugandan political operator and long-time Zanu-PF propagandist David Nyekorach-Matsanga has written to South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) demanding the removal of exiled Zimbabwean war veterans leader Blessed Geza, whom he accuses of using South African territory to plot the destabilisation of Zimbabwe.

In a letter dated May 18 and addressed to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, Nyekorach-Matsanga alleges that Geza is coordinating a sophisticated regime change agenda targeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling Zanu-PF party. The letter claims Geza is working in collaboration with foreign-sponsored actors, non-governmental organisations, political networks, and digital media platforms to undermine the Zimbabwean government from South Africa.

Nyekorach-Matsanga, who was previously hired by the late President Robert Mugabe as a public relations operative, says Geza's continued presence and political activity in South Africa are not only threatening Zimbabwe's sovereignty but also breaching regional and international legal frameworks. He cites treaties and protocols from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union, and the United Nations, which he claims Geza's actions violate.

He further argues that South Africa's inaction on Geza's alleged activities may amount to a breach of its own laws, including the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorism and Related Activities Act. Nyekorach-Matsanga's letter accuses Geza of orchestrating digital disinformation campaigns and protest mobilisation strategies against Mnangagwa's administration, describing these actions as deliberate attempts to destabilise the region.

Although Matsanga claims he is not acting at the behest of the Zimbabwean government, the move comes as Geza's criticism of Mnangagwa has grown more intense. From exile, Geza has accused Mnangagwa of gross misgovernance, corruption, and betraying the ideals of the liberation struggle. His stance has made him a political target back home, where he is now reportedly wanted by police for reasons widely believed to be politically motivated.

In the letter, Nyekorach-Matsanga insists that his organisation, the Pan African Forum Limited and Associates, a Kenyan-based advocacy group, is merely fulfilling its continental watchdog role to defend African sovereignty. He says his group is prepared to escalate the matter to the African Union's Peace and Security Council and the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation if the ANC fails to act against Geza.

He warns that failure to act could erode the ANC's standing as a Pan-African liberation movement and weaken the credibility of SADC's principles on non-interference and mutual respect for sovereignty.

Nyekorach-Matsanga, who also operates from London and Nairobi, has a long history of working with African strongmen, often under the guise of defending the continent from external interference. His reemergence on the Zimbabwean scene signals renewed efforts by Zanu-PF-linked actors to discredit opponents in exile as regional tensions over democratic governance and dissent continue to mount.
