Refurbishment of the New Zimsteel plant in Redcliff is progressing well with government promising operations will resume before the end of this year.

Government says engineers working on the New Zimsteel plant are making good progress and the steel giant is expected to resume operations before the end of next month.

Industry and Commerce Minister, Mike Bimha revealed during the 75th anniversary of the Engineering Iron and Steel Association of Zimbabwe in Harare where he said the New Zimsteel project is a priority under the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZIM ASSET).

Bimha said the expected resumption of operations at the former Ziscosteel will also help kick start other down stream industries thereby assist in the country's economic revival.

The Engineering Iron and Steel Association of Zimbabwe president, Mr Callisto Jokonya said the sector is ready to play an important role in the transformation of the economy through embracing value-addition.

He added that the New Zimsteel is the engine of the steel industry in Zimbabwe.

The steel association is celebrating 75 years in existence despite the folding of operations of several firms across the country.

The celebrations were being held under the theme: "Embracing Value-Addition as the Key to Increased Capacity and Competitiveness."
