NUM to strike at four De Beers businesses

THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will start a strike from this evening at four De Beers businesses in South Africa, including three mines, the union said.

De Beers, the world’s largest producer of rough diamonds by value and an Anglo American subsidiary, has said talks over wages with the NUM have deadlocked and efforts to resolve the impasse at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration have failed.

The strike will start at the Voorspoed mine in the Free State, the Kimberley mine in the Northern Cape, the Kimberley-based Diamond Trading Company and the Venetia mine near Musina.

The NUM said it was demanding a wage increase of 13% while the company offered 6%.

"We are also insisting that the company should phase out the A-band as there are only 25 employees throughout its operations and that they must offer a housing allowance of R4,500," NUM’s chief negotiator at De Beers, Peter Bailey, said.

The strike action would begin with the night shift and continue until all wage demands were met, the union said.
