HWANGE Colliery Company Limited, the country's largest coal mining company has finally appointed a substantive managing director, almost two years after the departure of Mr Fred Moyo, who is now deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development.

Mining engineer Mr Thomas Makore will be taking over from Mr Jemester Chininga, who is the current acting managing director, company spokesperson said yesterday.

Last year Mr Chininga took over from Mr Stanford Ndlovu, the company's finance director who was acting managing director since the departure of Mr Fred Moyo in August 2012.

"I can confirm that Mr Makore has been appointed managing director of the company," said the spokesperson without giving details on when he will assume the office.

Since the departure of Mr Moyo, Hwange has been on the market searching for a substantive managing director. It is understood that its previous three choices were turned down by the Government, also the largest shareholder of the country's biggest coal mining firm.

One of the candidates that the board had recommended was former managing direction Dr Godfrey Dzinomwa, who left the company in 2006.

Other candidates that were also dropped were Mr Terence Mukupe, a former co-chief executive of Renaissance Capital Zimbabwe, and Mr George Chigora, formerly with Zisco.
