Chamisa dismisses Mugabe ties

Chamisa dismisses Mugabe ties

MDC president Nelson Chamisa Wednesday dismissed his alleged ties with former president Robert Mugabe whom he accused of violating the secrecy of the vote by declaring he was going to vote for the former during last July's presidential elections.

This is after the opposition chief had attacked President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the latter's decision to invite Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni to officially open this year's Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo on Friday.

Asked during a media conference at his party's headquarters to explain his perceived relationship with Mugabe, who has been accused as a one-time dictator, Chamisa launched an attack on the ex-leader.

"Mr Mugabe is one of the people who violated the rules of secrecy of the vote by indicating that he will vote for us. We are not in the business as I have always indicated of choosing supporters or voters.

"The relationship is that of a former president and an incoming president. That is the relationship. Beyond that, there is no relationship."

Chamisa added, "I have not been able to even have contact with him. I have said I am going to visit Mr Mugabe as and when the opportunity arises. I have not had the opportunity to be able to. I am told he is not around and not well."

During the period towards the July 2018 elections, some Zanu-PF activists accused the opposition leader of being funded by Mugabe in his bid to be president.

Mugabe had made it clear he was not going to support Mnangagwa whom he accused of dethroning him through a November 2017 military coup.

There were rumours that the ex-State leader had volunteered his funding upon Chamisa's promise he was going to appoint former First Lady Grace Mugabe as one of his deputies, if he won the election.

Said Chamisa during the press briefing, "If Mnangagwa truly represents the Second Republic, he must show a break with the past, a break with the Mugabe politics of associating with people with questionable credentials."
