Potraz engages Econet, Telecel to resolve dispute
Published: 27 July 2013
The government says it has held discussions with mobile network operators Econet and Telecel to resolve their interconnection dispute through its regulator Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe, (POTRAZ).

Following the dispute in which Econet disconnected Telecel from its network government has engaged the two operators separately to find an amicable solution.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Infrastructural Development, Mr Munesu Munodawafa said the issue is fairly legal but both parties are eager to resolve it.

He said: "As things stand we are dealing with them but we do so with POTRAZ, we are kept in the loop."

Negotiations between the government and Telecel for the issuing of a 20-year licence are still in progress.

The firm's major shareholder Telecel International was directed to sell 20 percent of its 60 percent stake to Empowerment Corporation, its local partner, which holds the 40 percent balance, in line with initial terms of the licence issued in 1998 as a condition for its licence renewal.
