Zimbabwe government finalise Telecel license renewal

Zimbabwe government finalise Telecel license renewal
Published: 06 August 2013
Top executives in Zimbabwe's telecoms industry have just advised that mobile license renewal talks between Telecel, POTRAZ and the ministry of Transport, Telecommunications and Infrastructural Development have been finalised.

The concluding talks took place today in Harare. Telecel, the sources tell us, has therefore now been licensed. The sources say an announcement will be made either today or tomorrow. It's still not clear however how the indigenisation issue has been resolved.

The development brings to an end months of speculation, anxiety, and downright termination of some services in Zimbabwe's telecoms space. With the license issues sorted, the Telecel and Econet interconnection dispute will also likely end.

According to our sources, along with the agreement on the license, is the possible payment of the first installment of the $137.5 million license fee to government.

We will be posting updates on the matter as we get them.
