The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe says at least 20 of its members have been forced to close shop during the past 12 because of competition from the uncontrolled importation of cheap flour.

According to the association, the influx of cheap imported flour has worsened the situation for players in the sector who are currently facing capital constraints.

The association's chairperson, Tafadzwa Musarara said protection of the local milling industry from the cheap imports remains critical in ensuring that when the SADC zero duty regime becomes operational, the country will be able to compete.

According to the 2013 Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) manufacturing sector survey report, the baking and milling industry were among the most improved sub-sectors in terms of capacity utilisation.

However, according to players in the sub sector, the in flux of cheap flour and maize meal remains one of the biggest threats to the optimal performance of the industry.
