Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa yesterday dissolved boards of three institutions under his ambit, namely the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC), Minerals Marketing Authority of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) and diamond mining firm, Marange Resources.

"The duties and functions of these boards will be assumed by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Professor Francis Gudyanga until the appointments of new boards," Chidhakwa said in a brief statement.

Minister Chidhakwa did not give reasons for dismissing the boards but government has expressed concern over the poor performance of most of its departments.

Although the Minister was not reachable for comment, a source in the Ministry said the dismissal was due to non-performance and poor management.

The MMCZ and the ZMDC boards were being led by acting chairpersons. Minister Chidhakwa has since his appointment announced on many occasions intentions to "clean up" the mining sector which is riddled with corruption and under marketing of the country's mineral resources for personal enrichment.

The ZMDC is the investment arm of the government in the mining sector with stakes in diamond, gold and other companies.

Former ZMDC chairman Goodwills-Masimirembwa stepped down mid this year after he was embroiled in a $6 million bribery scam, with other top managers being fired for mismanagement.
