Chrome prices tumble
Published: 17 July 2017
Tumbling chrome prices have left local miners clutching at hopes of attracting huge investment in the value-addition process of the commodity which requires over half a billion dollars.

Small-scale chrome miners are finding the going tough as prices of the commodity continue to tumble on the international market with local buyers paying as a low as US$50 per tonne.

The Chrome Miners Association is pinning its hopes on the setting up of more value-addition plants for the commodity to ensure that they get maximum value from the national resource.

Despite a promising first half of the year, the sector is facing a number of challenges which are threatening viability and stakeholders feel there is need for urgent engagement with government.

Currently, government is working on modalities for the allocation of chrome claims ceded by ZIMASCO in February this year.
