Amnesty attracts few tax defaulters

ZIMBABWE'S tax amnesty programme, which was launched three months ago, has brought in a tiny fraction of millions of dollars government hoped to collect to boost government coffers, The Financial Gazette reported.

Without mentioning figures, Faith Mazani, the commissioner general of the country's tax collection agency, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), confirmed last week that very few companies have responded to the amnesty.

The slow uptake means ZIMRA will have to back to the drawing board and find new ways of getting non-compliant companies into the tax net.
